Crimson Haste

"Crimson Haste Makes Waste" is the first segment of the twenty-first episode of the first season of Hamster & Gretel, and the fortieth episode overall. It is paired with "The Break-Stuff Club" and premiered on Disney Channel on July 1, 2023.[1][2]

As Kevin, Fred and Anthony assist Hiromi with making a commercial for a product called Mustanchup, a speedy villain named Crimson Haste is stealing various items at the mall.

Plot[]

Kevin, Fred, and Anthony are assisting Hiromi in the production of a Mustanchup commercial she intends to enter in a contest when Veronica Hill reports on a string of recent thefts at the mall. Fred later finds that the culprit is none other than Crimson Haste, a speedy villain that escaped Hamster and Gretel during a previous encounter. Kevin vows to catch the villain and help Hiromi finish her commercial.

Hamster and Gretel film Haste stealing from kiosks and talking about her plans via cellphone, after which they give chase. However, Haste proves too fast for them and eventually makes off with the stolen items and their camera. When the heroes pass this information on to Kevin, they mention that she bears a jacket with "Hasty Delivery" written on it and the three discover that it's Crimson Haste's own company and delivery service. Kevin then orchestrates a plan to catch the criminal, which involves her returning the camera to their present location and filling the mall's fountain with Mustanchup, which slows her down due to a side effect that occurs when Mustanchup comes into contact with fire.

News report[]

Veronica Hill: Breaking news: This is Veronica Hill at the Kiosk Corridor, the crown jewel of our city's open air mall, which has been burglarized by an invisible perpetrator! And it's not a ghost: we checked.
(Cut to an earlier recording of Veronica Hill and her cameraman during a break, with Veronica shaking a Magic 8-Ball)
Veronica Hill: (to Magic 8-Ball) Are you a ghost?
(Beat as Veronica reads the 8-Ball's answer)
Veronica Hill: Ooh! (to cameraman) It says no.

Memorable quotes[]

Kevin: Do you have another take in you, Anthony? That disclaimer didn't quite feel natural.
Anthony: Dude, these ingredients aren't natural. What kind of sauce has... "artificial glorbatate?" What's natural glorbatate?
Hiromi: I don't know, but the only ingredients we need are teamwork, friendship, and a positive attitude. That's the recipie for winning the Mustanchup make your own commercial contest!
Fred: Ah, the perfect content contest. Free labor wrapped in an exploitative, opportunistic shell. Smell that capitalism.
Anthony: (sniffs) I think that's the Mustanchup... or maybe your costume.
Fred: (sighs) It's both.
Kevin: She's hit the same section of the mall every day this week at 2:00. If we set the camera to slow motion, we could catch her red-handed on video and finish Hiromi's commercial! It's a Haste-Mustanchup two-fer!
Hamster: That's not a thing.
Hiromi: Ketchup, let's talk character motivation. What's your traumatic backstory?
Fred: Um... seeing my friends and family squashed and put into a bottle?
Gretel: So she just steals stuff from the mall and delivers it to people. How is that a business?
Kevin: I think we should go big, you know? Go big or go home!
Anthony: I'm down with going home.
Fred: Yeah, sign me up for that second part.
Anthony: So, is this, like, a normal weekend for you guys?
Fred: Just trust the process, new guy.
Board meeting leader: Okay, so the commercial contest was a tremendous failure.
Businesswoman: I don't even get that commercial. Why were Hamster and Gretel there?
Board meeting leader: Let's just make Mustanchup an engine coolant like we originally intended.
Businesswoman: But―
Board meeting leader: Agreeing with me will end this meeting early. The other board members nod in agreement.
Board meeting leader: Meeting adjourned.

Background information[]

Trivia[]

  • This episode features a new villain that shares some similarities with another: both Crimson Haste, and a currently unnamed villain that made a minor appearance in the beginning of "Superhero Sibling Rivalry", are women clad in a reddish color that run fast. Oddly enough, the minor villain from "Superhero Sibling Rivalry" is shown on one of the key art posters among several villains that made very prominent appearances, but has not made any appearances since "Superhero Sibling Rivalry" and was never acknowledged in "Crimson Haste Makes Waste" either, despite Crimson Haste's similar powers and use of the color red.

Allusions[]

  • The title of the episode refers to the idiom "haste makes waste", which means that rushing through things too quickly will often lead to more time being consumed due to creating more mistakes.
  • Heinz Saucy Sauce - Similar to many of the condiments of the Saucy Sauce series of Heinz (including, most famously, Mayochup), Mustanchup is a mixture of three condiments, with its name being a portmanteau of said three condiments. The combined color of Mustanchup also has a similar peach color to Mayochup (or fry sauce) and Kranch, due to the involvement of red ketchup, yellow mustard, and cream-colored ranch dressing.
  • Magic 8-Ball - Veronica Hill is seen using this toy when trying to predict if the villain is a ghost or not.
