— Hamster, Empower Failure |
Hamster (possibly Hamster Grant-Gomez) is one of the titular protagonists of Hamster & Gretel. He is the pet hamster of Gretel. He and Gretel have been bestowed superpowers by two aliens and instructed to use them for good. Their superhero personas are kept secret for mostly everyone, including Gretel's parents Dave and Carolina. Gretel's big brother Kevin, their cousin Fred, their grandmother Carmen Gomez, and Gretel's best friend Bailey are among the only people that know about their secret identities.
Unlike his owner, Hamster is more mature and collected, knowing exactly what to do in most situations. While Hamster is given the ability to talk, he's often quiet and doesn't emote much beyond a bored expression. When he does talk, he tends to quip about the current situation in a somewhat jaded tone.
Physical appearance[]

From the side, Hamster's snout is shown to be slightly pronounced, normally not seen in profile or from the front.
Hamster has tan fur with a lighter snout and belly and a large brown spot on his back. His resting face looks very bored. Hamster also has a deep voice, like a grown man. This is likely due to the fact that Hamster is already an adult hamster (as male hamsters reach their maturity between 4-6 weeks after birth).
In his superhero form, he wears a yellow jumpsuit with an orange cape and a white insignia depicting an orange letter H inside of it. Usually, he doesn't wear anything, because he's a hamster.

Personality[]
Hamster is usually deadpan and stoic, and when not doing superhero duties he goes at his own pace. He tends to speak monotonously, which is already a rare occasion to begin with. He also likes to mess with Kevin. He is also caring towards others (especially Gretel) and is secretly fond of Kevin like a best friend.
Powers and abilities[]
Superpowers[]
Aliens have given Gretel and her pet Hamster "powers unimaginable", which includes a variety of superpowers, including the following:
- Flight - Both Hamster and Gretel are able to fly in the air and remain airborne in place.
- Enhanced speed - Hamster and Gretel are also able to fly super fast, or at least "faster than a scooter", as the intro theme song states. While not as fast as speedy villains like Crimson Haste, they are able to somewhat keep up with her during a chase.
- Super-strength - Hamster is able to throw hard punches and kicks. The intro theme also states that she and Hamster are "stronger than metal." "Superhero Sibling Rivalry" also reveals that Hamster and Gretel are able to lift 157 tons (in weight) between them, but not 200 tons.
- Instant costume change - Hamster and Gretel are both able to change from their current outfit to their superhero outfit and vice versa.
- Human speech and intelligence - Thanks to the superpowers granted by the aliens, Hamster also gained the ability to talk and think like a human being. His ability to speak was not revealed until the end of "Empower Failure" however, to which Gretel reacts in surprise.
- Water Absorption & Breath - In "Empower Failure," Hamster consumed an entire water main's supply of water. However, he cannot hold it in for very long, as he accidentally released it all toward Kevin, drenching him and filling his entire van.
- Air Breath - Hamster is capable of inhaling and expelling copious amounts of air. In "Oakey Dokey," he used his super breath to extinguish a flaming meteor. He also used this to blow away the Dog Napper during their fight.
- Heat vision - While heat vision is predominantly used by Gretel, Hamster is also able to use it, as seen in "Micromanager".
- Indestructibility - Hamster gained a much sturdier body structure that gives him immunity to electricity, best exemplified in "Hamnesia". However, the same episode also shows that Hamster still can get amnesia when hit by a tractor-trailer on his head.
- Martial arts - Hamster proved to be a master of martial arts in "The Opposite of Smart." Later, he learned the beautiful Brazilian martial art of capoeira by studying the Dust Might's fighting techniques.
Talents[]
Possibly due to him being bestowed with superpowers, Hamster is able to express some other talents.
- Card tricks - In "Neigh, It Ain't So!" Hamster shows Bailey a card trick.
- Irish dancing - In "The Opposite of Smart," Hamster does an Irish jig while in his dog disguise.
- Go Fish - Hamster won the title of Las Vegas Go Fish Champion in "U.F. UH-OH!"
- Piano music - "Hamnesia" reveals that Hamster is able to play piano, doing so a couple times a week at the jazz club Riff Van Winkle's. Patrons at the jazz club enjoy Hamster's piano play a lot.
- Art painting - "Hamnesia" also reveals that Hamster is a gifted semi-abstract artist, with his own exposition wing at Gallery Aubergine. His paintings are in high demand and sold at a high price.
- Pool - Hamster showcased his pool skills against Kevin in "When Life Gives You Lemons."
- Knitting - In "Flake It Till You Make It," Hamster decides to pick up knitting.
- Construction - In "Lair Necessities," Hamster showed he knew how to work with concrete to build a foundation. That night, he built the gang's new lair singlehandedly.
- Charcoal drawing - In "I Love Luchie," Hamster was making a charcoal sketch of the Welsh Parliament building.
- Balalaika - "My Hammie Vice" reveals that Hamster can play the balalaika.
Weaknesses[]
It is revealed in "Exclamation Strikes Back" that the weird glowing rock that disables Gretel's superpowers from "U.F. UH-OH!" has a similar effect to Hamster. Professor Exclamation is able to exploit the rock's mysterious powers by draining Hamster and Gretel's superpowers via one of his inventions. Under influence of the rock, Hamster reverts back to a regular hamster completely, being unable to speak and think like a human as well.
Even with superpowers, however, Hamster is still vulnerable to a variety of circumstances.
- Uncontrolled workout routine - He is not immune to sore muscles and fatigue when working out together with Gretel too recklessly, despite his indestructibility.
History[]
Hamster was originally purchased from the 4 Legs and 2 Eyes Pet Shop. A store employee, Joanie, used to vacuum near his cage, which frightened him.

Relationships[]
Family[]
Gretel Grant-Gomez[]
Being his owner and superhero partner, Hamster's bond with Gretel is very close. When Gretel went missing, he became deeply saddened, and his determination to get her back allowed him to break through an unbreakable door and defeat both FistPuncher and The Destructress singlehandedly. Hamster tends to go along with Gretel's ideas more, impulsive or not, and is rarely in disagreement with the little girl. This could possibly stem from Hamster being mature and responsible enough to not require instructions from Gretel's brother Kevin, and thus could act as a secondary caretaker for Gretel. That said, Hamster doesn't like to be the middle man when Gretel has troubles with other close friends, such as Bailey.
Kevin Grant-Gomez[]
While still having a close bond like with Gretel, Hamster and Kevin tend to be more at odds. Hamster tends to act like an "older brother" in the relationship, despite Kevin being much older than him. Due to this, Hamster feels like Kevin isn't experienced enough, and tends to prank him. Unlike Gretel, Hamster doesn't really need Kevin's guidance, and is able to figure out the solution to a problem by himself. Since Kevin has no superpowers, Hamster sometimes feels like he has to do double the work when they team up without Gretel. He has also joked that "Kevin is right" are the three saddest words in the English language, implying that he feels Kevin is more often than not wrong about something. That said, though, Hamster does have a deep respect for Kevin on some level, and clearly understands the pain he's going through, as expressed in his paintings. He is able to work together with Kevin when required, acting like "bros" when they are together, as Hamster follows his plans to defeat the villains they face. It was revealed in The Art of Deception that Hamster secretly value and considered Kevin as his best friend, showcasing of their bond like brothers.

Trivia[]
- Hamster has some similarities to Perry the Platypus from Phineas and Ferb, as well as Diogee from Milo Murphy's Law. All three are pets to the protagonist, both Hamster and Perry are smarter than normal pets by showing human intelligence, and both Hamster and Diogee help the protagonist when they need it.
- His favorite food is cabbage.
- When put together with Gretel's name (just like the series named after them), Hamster's name is a play on the fairy tale Hansel and Gretel.
- Hamster is similar to Ferb Fletcher in a few ways: both don't talk as often as their partners (Gretel and Phineas), often providing dialogue for comic relief (although Hamster talks a bit more often than Ferb does), and are stoic and rarely emote, sporting neutral expressions most of the time.
- So far the only characters who knows Hamster's secret are Kevin, Fred, Van Dyke, Abuelita, Bailey and Tobor.
- So far, "Two Girls, A Guy and the Council of Düm,I Think, Therefore I Slam and Lorraine, Rattle, and Roll are only episodes where he is absent.
