I should clarify – I talk to onions and they listen!

La Cebolla

"La Ballad Of La Cebolla" is the second segment of the fourth episode of the first season of Hamster & Gretel, and the eighth episode overall. It is paired with "Cheer Cheer Bang Bang" and premiered on Disney Channel on August 27, 2022.[1] On August 17, 2022, this episode was released early on Disney+.

Kevin and Gretel have an encounter with La Cebolla, a former telenovela star-turned supervillain who seeks revenge by making everyone cry by using her sky-bestowed power of talking to onions.

Plot

While at the grocery store purchasing ingredients for a special remedy soup for Dave, Kevin and Gretel encounter La Cebolla, a supervillain with the power to communicate with onions. At first, they do not take her seriously, but she proves herself worthy as she continually wreaks havoc on the city, stealing onions from around town in the process. Meanwhile, Carolina has Kevin and Gretel run around the block three times with garlic, after which La Cebolla appears again, leading to a battle. La Cebolla incapacitates Hamster with onion breath and captures Gretel with intent to drain her powers to activate her onion amplifier, which will allow her to communicate with every onion on earth.

Kevin learns from Carolina that onion breath can be cured by feeding Hamster ice water with apple slices and screaming a secret into the cup, which he does. Hamster and Kevin then find La Cebolla's lair, where she reveals her grand master plan to have every onion in the world burst, but the onions do not like this plan and retreat to whence they came. Gretel defeats La Cebolla, who is promptly taken into police custody. Kevin wonders what La Cebolla meant when she said that she received her powers from "a light from the sky," but he and Gretel brush it off when the latter reminds him of how ridiculous her power was. The episode then ends with the aliens that gave Hamster and Gretel their powers lamenting the fact that their latest experiment was a failure.

News report

Veronica Hill: This is Veronica Hill reporting on a strange phenomenon that has authorities confounded. Stores and restaurants have reported the mass disappearance of onions from their shelves and storerooms.
Veronica Hill: And to the viewers at home who ask, "Why should I care?" let me just say... I agree with you. I've done a lot of field pieces in my career and I can safely say that this is the most uninteresting one yet.
Veronica Hill: Reports of vast migrations of onions are pouring in from all over the world, baffling scientists. Is this the work of some beautiful, misunderstood soul whose talent has been ignored too long? The answer, of course, is no. Only a loser would seek validation through such absurd methods. The better question is: what did I do to keep getting assigned these awful, awful field pieces?!

Memorable quotes

Kevin: Hamster, you need to scream a secret into the cup.
Hamster: I'm a hamster; I don't have any secrets. You need to do it.
Kevin: Me?
Hamster: Yes, Kevin. Quickly! I'm fading!
Kevin looks around, then yells into the cup:
Kevin: Sometimes, I smell my socks after taking them off and if they don't smell like soup, I wear them again!
(beat)
Kevin: Hamster?
Hamster gets up.
Hamster: Okay, I'm better.
Kevin: It worked?
Hamster: No, I was just messing with you. The water did the trick. Let's go.

Background information

Trivia

  • The experiment number the aliens use for La Cebolla, 622H-108, appears to be a real-life production code for a Hamster & Gretel episode, and is likely meant to reflect the production code for this very episode.

Allusions

  • Batman / DC Comics - La Cebolla emerges out of a giant onion in a somewhat similar fashion to the plant-based DC villain Poison Ivy. Also, her ability to talk to onions and control onions is somewhat similar to Poison Ivy's ability to control and communicate with plants.
