"La Sombrerona" is the first segment of the twenty-third episode of the first season of Hamster & Gretel, and the forty-fourth episode overall. It is paired with "Two Girls, A Guy and the Council of Düm" and premiered on Disney Channel on July 15, 2023.[1][2]
A mysterious villain, known by folk tales as La Sombrerona, is forcibly taking away people's happiness at the city's carnival, which Hamster and Gretel try to put a stop to with Fred and Abuelita.
Plot[]
While under strict orders to finish her homework, Gretel learns that a villain named La Somberona is terrorizing a carnival by stripping people of their happiness. Abuelita, who is babysitting Gretel, initially refuses to allow her to fight her but changes her mind when La Sombrerona attacks a shuffleboard game. Meanwhile, Kevin fiercely competes against a child at a carnival game in order to win a stuffed bear for Hiromi.
When La Sombrerona hits Hamster and Gretel, Fred and Abuelita counter the effects by throwing a massive dance party. However, this only results in creating more targets for her. The heroes then discover that La Sombrerona's powers come from the five hats she obtained after the death of her five husbands. They destroy the hats to find an electromagnetic tower permanently attached to her head, which is then destroyed when Kevin, having spent all of his money and sold his two watches, runs into her in a last-ditch effort to win the stuffed bear.

News report[]
Veronica Hill: We interrupt whatever boring thing you're doing right now for this important announcement: our fair city is under attack. The suspect? A woman with long hair, pale skin, and wearing five hats appears to drain people of their happiness. I know the feeling as I was left at the altar by a giant man-baby last month. Please remove that graphic. |
Veronica Hill: Breaking news! The five-hatted hat lady who makes everyone sad has just attacked the shuffleboard courts at the senior citizen center! Old Man: Great. Now, I'm old and sad. (cries) |
Memorable quotes[]
Abuelita: Ay, this is very serious! Her name is La Sombrerona! Gretel: La Sombrerona? Doesn't that mean "hat lady?" (giggles) Abuelita: Sh-sh-ssh! Don't make fun. She can smell laughter. Gretel: Can she not just hear it? Abuelita: That too. |
Gretel: Thanks for coming, Fred. Fred: Normally, I shun carnivals, but a villain who hates happiness? Now, that sounds like a good time. |
Gretel has lifted the entire roof off the funhouse to search for La Sombrerona. Gretel: A-ha! As Gretel flies back down, she lets go of the roof. Gretel: La Sombrerona. Naturally, the roof crashes back down, breaking all of the mirrors in the funhouse. Hamster: I can't even calculate how many years of bad luck that is. |
Stand Operator: Here we go. Shoot the water into the clown's mouth in a vain attempt to win the affection of the girl who only sees you as a friend. Kevin: We have not established that yet! |
La Sombrerona: What are you staring at? Fred: You suck happiness out of people. Hilarious! La Sombrerona: I'll show you hilarious! La Sombrerona shoots Fred with her anti-happiness beam, but nothing happens to her. Fred: Eh. |
Gretel: Hamster, it looks like her powers come from her hats. Hamster: It's time to take the "sombrero" out of "La Sombrerona." Gretel: So she'll just be "na?" Hamster: Exactly! |
Kevin: His water pistol is stronger! This game is rigged! Stand Operator: It's a carnival; everything is rigged. |

Allusions[]
- El Sombrerón - The title of this episode, and its eponymous villain, appear to be based on this Guatemalan legend and Mexican boogeyman.
- Phineas and Ferb - La Sombrerona's husbands getting eaten by tigers outside their natural habitat is similar to Baljeet's ancestors being attacked by tigers outside their natural habitat, from the episode "Tour de Ferb".
- Both "La Sombrerona" and "Tour de Ferb" had their stories made in part by Jim Bernstein, strengthening the allusion.
