“ | I'm a superhero now! You don't need math to lift things, fly through fast and punch bad guys! | ” |
— Gretel |
"Math Punch" is the second segment of the second episode of the first season of Hamster & Gretel, and the fourth episode overall. It is paired with "Recipe for Disaster" and premiered on Disney Channel on August 13, 2022.[1]
A supervillain by the name of Rodney Thunderpants uses his electrokinetic powers to fry as many cellphones as he can for his hatred of the modern devices, and Hamster and Gretel try to put a stop to it to get out of math homework.
Meanwhile, Dave tries to give a wedding anniversary gift to Carolina so perfect that she'll cry, as he usually ends up crying in the past due to her gifts one-upping his.
Plot
As Kevin attempts to help a disinterested Gretel complete her math homework, Dave explains his intentions to make Carolina cry with a special wedding anniversary gift, having been out done by her gifts to him during years past. Meanwhile, supervillain Rodney Thunderpants arrives to wreak havoc on the city by destroying everyone's cellphones and tablets. Seeing the encounter as an excuse to avoid doing math, Gretel rushes out to stop him, ignoring Kevin's statements about math being a useful tool.
Downtown, Rodney tells Veronica Hill his backstory about how he came to dislike smartphones and how he gained his powers before Gretel confronts him. However, Rodney soon overpowers her and unleashes and energy ball with intent to destroy the cell tower, frying every smartphone within a 50-mile radius. Kevin follows Rodney, who hijacks a steam train that later falls off a cliff, while Hamster and Gretel chase down the energy ball. An employee attempts to use math to determine how to save the cell tower, but Gretel impatiently resolves to move the cell tower as the energy ball nears, preventing Dave from downloading his anniversary gift to Carolina.
When Gretel learns that Kevin and Rusty are falling off the cliff, Gretel reluctantly uses math to determine how fast she must travel to save her brother. When she succeeds, Rusty learns that smartphones can actually be useful and decides to get himself one. Meanwhile, Dave allows Carolina to show him her gift, a video compilation of all of their most cherished moments together; this then makes him cry.

Running gags
Super "Attack"
Gretel: If a train carrying my brother and a lightning-powered cowboy supervillain is traveling sixty miles per hour... Hamster: Why is there always a train? Gretel: Math! As Race Against Time continues, Gretel calculates using a notepad, while various mathematical imagery, as well as the word "MATH!" in colorful letters, fly by. Gretel: We have to fly... 180 miles per hour! Wow, that's fast. Hamster, push me! Hamster pushes Gretel. The math-related graphics, including the word "MATH!", drop and land on a random guy reading a newspaper. |
News report
Veronica Hill: Veronica Hill on the scene downtown, where a cowboy-themed supervillain is using lightning powers to render personal electronic devices utterly useless. |
Andrew and Clyde
Gretel sends Rodney flying into some bushes behind Andrew and Clyde, playing chess. The fight continues in the background Andrew: Did you hire them to distract me, Clyde? Clyde: No, I did not, Andrew. I hired these guys. Four men dressed as Russian guards appear and juggle swords while dancing Andrew: Well played, Clyde. Well played. |
Memorable quotes
Gretel: Yes! I just took out Hamster's artillery! Hamster: You have no honor. |
Kevin: Everyone―even superheroes―need to learn math. Gretel: Nope! Kevin: Yes. Gretel: No times a jillion. Kevin: That's math! Even though a jillion isn't a number, which you would know if you learned math! |
Kevin: All right, fine. We save the day, then math. Gretel: What did you say after "save the day?" I couldn't hear you; I was busy not doing math. Kevin: Gretel, I said we're going to do that math homework. Gretel: Let's fly! (she and Hamster fly off) Kevin: I know you can hear me! Gretel: No, I can't! I'm flying faster than the speed of sound! Kevin: Again, that's math! Well, technically, it's physics, which is just hard math! |
Gretel: Rodney Thunderpants? Rodney: At your service, ma'am. Gretel: So, you shoot lightning and your name is Rodney, and you didn't think to call yourself Lightning Rod? Rodney: Well, that's just a―Darn it, and I already printed out the business cards! |
Kevin: I'm gonna die with a lightning-themed cowboy! Rodney: Oh, just call me Lightning Rod! |
Kevin: Wait, how did you guys get here so fast? Police Officer: GPS on our phones. Rodney: Phones can do that? Police Officer: Yeah, there's even an app to help you find a faithful horse. Rodney: Maybe I should get myself one of them smartphones. Kevin: You couldn't have come to this realization a train chase ago? |

Background information
Trivia
- Although Jeff "Swampy" Marsh, the co-creator of Phineas and Ferb and Milo Murphy's Law (alongside Dan Povenmire), was not a co-creator of this show, he does have some involvement in the show as a voice actor; he voiced Andrew, the old man playing chess with Clyde, another old man (who is also voiced by Dan Povenmire).
- This makes both Clyde and Andrew the fourth duo in a Dan Povenmire show to be voiced by both Dan and Swampy, following Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz and Major Francis Monogram in Phineas and Ferb, Vinnie Dakota and Balthazar Cavendish in Milo Murphy's Law, and Colonel Niblet and Lieutenant Tennant, also in Milo Murphy's Law.
