'Sup, li'l mama? I'm kind of busy robbing this apple-hoarding punk. I'm deejaying a massive horse party tonight, and we need some apples. Heh, it's an open barn.

Neighslayer

"Neigh, It Ain't So!" is the second segment of the fifth episode of the first season of Hamster & Gretel, and the tenth episode overall. It is paired with "Comic Shop CopyCat" and premiered on Disney Channel on September 3, 2022.[1] On August 17, 2022, this episode was released early on Disney+.

Bailey gets to spend the day with her favorite superheroes Hamster and Gretel, so in order to not blow her cover, Gretel promises to lay off the fighting for the day. This leads into her having to face the Neighslayer, a human-horse hybrid and literal party animal, without throwing a single punch.

Plot

Bailey gets a chance to spend the day with Hamster and Gretel after winning a radio contest. Kevin initially advises Gretel against it out of fear that Bailey might recognize her (as she is unaware that her best friend Gretel and superhero Gretel are one in the same), but ultimately concedes when Gretel promises not to do any physical fighting. Thus, they spend their day doing mundane tasks such as rescuing a cat from a tree and recycling. Suddenly, the Neighslayer, a human-horse hybrid creature, is caught stealing apples from a local produce stand for a party he is planning later. Gretel tries to talk Neighslayer out of continuing his crime spree, but he refuses and makes off. As Hamster, Gretel, and Bailey chase after Neighslayer and his horse minions, Gretel tries to get into contact with Kevin, but he fails to aswer due to watching Yuko Cheerleading Warrior Attack 7 with Fred. Neighslayer then captures Hamster and plots to dip him in acid.

To rescue Hamster, Gretel relies on Bailey's knowledge of horses she aquired from completing a school report about horses recently, and uses pepperments (which she recieved earlier as a reward for rescuing the cat) to distract the horse minions. Gretel and Neighslayer then break out into a rap battle, during which Gretel is able to free Hamster, who then defeats Neighslayer. When they reunite with Kevin and Fred, Gretel reports that Bailey is now safe at home and that she honored her agreement to avoid physical fighting. The next day, Bailey tells Gretel about her day with Hamster and superhero Gretel, and the two promise that they are still best friends.

Allusions

  • "Say It Ain't So" - The title of this episode may be a pun on the 1994 song by the band Weezer.
  • "Say It Ain't So, Joe" - The episode title may also refer to the 1975 song by Murray Head. It was featured on the album Say It Ain't So.
  • Black Sox Scandal - The episode's title may also be a pun on the phrase "Say it ain't so, Joe", spoken by a reporter regarding Shoeless Joe Jackson admitting that he and seven other Chicago White Sox players were given money to throw the 1919 World Series.
  • Jeopardy! - The first contest caller phrases his answer in the form of a question, much like contestants are required to do on this famous television game show.
  • Iron Man - Gretel names her voice communicator to Bailey after Kevin as K.E.V.I.N.C. (Kind Electronic Voice Investigation Nano-Computer; the "C" being silent), a very similar name to J.A.R.V.I.S. (Just A Rather Very Intelligent System), which used to be the voice computer integrated in Tony Stark's Iron Man suit before it received physical form as Vision in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
  • Milo Murphy's Law - Bailey pointing out that "Kind Electronic Voice Investigation Nano-Computer" spells "K.E.V.I.N.C." instead of "K.E.V.I.N." and Gretel mentioning the C is silent, is similar to a joke in "The Phineas and Ferb Effect", in which Baljeet and Buford point out that "Machine Used for Literally Converting Humans To Plants" should spell "M.U.L.C.H.T.P." instead of "M.U.L.C.H.", as Derek responds that the "T.P." is slient.
