Hamster & Gretel Wiki

Oakey is always gonna be here for us, just like our friendship.

"Oakey Dokey" is the second segment of the first episode of the first season of Hamster & Gretel, and the second episode overall. It is paired with "Empower Failure", and premiered after the Lost Song Event of Z-O-M-B-I-E-S 3 on Disney Channel, as well as on Disney XD, on August 12, 2022.[1]

Kevin is annoyed that instead of listening to his instructions on how to save the day, Gretel chooses to simply punch the problems away because it's less complicated. This disagreement continues as they have to stop a meteor from crashing in town.

Plot

Downtown, a popcorn factory has been caught alight as a fire department tries to take it out only for the water of the hydrant's pressure to fail, when the superhero duo of Hamster and Gretel show up, and despite Kevin's clear instructions, punches the water tower and puts out the blaze. This causes a chain-reaction where the tower's cover breaks off a satellite's solar panel, causing the Grant-Gomez' GPSes to go offline.

They head on over to a picnic with their immediate family, where Gretel meets with Bailey over the old oak tree Oakey, which was incidentally the location where they became best friends on that one kindergarden field trip long ago. Meanwhile, the tower's cover strikes a meteor, setting it on a crash course... for Earth.

This is of immediate concern to Fred, who calls up Kevin to tell him about the threat, who then informs Hamster and Gretel to go to the nearest bandshell to use it as a ramp to launch the meteor skyward. However, he fails to remember that Gretel's mantra is to punch, punch, punch, so she does exactly that.

It works, though a chunk of the meteor breaks off and crashes straight into Oakey, destroying it. While Kevin goes on about Oakey not being able to be fixed with superhuman strength and speed, Hamster and Gretel get to work doing exactly that (with the co-star in a tub of glue). Surprised, Kevin airs out his frustrations about Gretel just not listening to him to Fred as Gretel offers him a ride. Kevin hangs up just as Fred is about to make another "roll with the punches" joke (as Gretel made one earlier).

Meanwhile, elsewhere, two teens encounter the same aliens that gave Hamster and Gretel their powers and grant them said powers, but for evil instead.

Background information

Trivia

  • So far, this is the only episode of the entire series to be seven minutes long. This is unusual for a Disney series; a typical episode of one is eleven or twenty-two minutes long.
    • This is due to the runtime of "Empower Failure" clocking in at 15 minutes, the longest for a premiere episode segment (this excludes series like Gravity Falls and The Owl House whose episodes are always 22 minutes long).
  • This episode released to Disney+ on August 17, 2022.
  • This episode along with Z-O-M-B-I-E-S 3 was simulcasted at 10:00 pm on Disney XD.
  • This is the first episode of the series not to have any songs. This is most likely due to its shorter runtime compared to later episodes.

Allusions

  • The episode title is a pun on the phrase "okey dokey", while incorporating Oakey in it.
  • References to other Dan Povenmire shows:
    • Phineas and Ferb - The meteor nearly destroys Totally Tools, a company that also appeared in the Phineas and Ferb episode, "Perry the Actorpus."
    • Milo Murphy's Law - The fire chief in the beginning could be Richard Chase, Melissa's father. However, he is colored differently, and he is voiced by Dan Povenmire instead of Adrian Pasdar, though he could be Richard's cousin.
