“ | No need to sit, Veronica. We just wanted to tell you there's been a small change of plans. We're hiring someone else to be lead serious correspondent. He'll be interviewing Mayor Meyer today. | ” |

"Over the Hill" is the first segment of the twenty-second episode of the first season of Hamster & Gretel, and the forty-second episode overall. It is paired with "The Ice Queen Cometh" and premiered on Disney Channel on July 8, 2023.[2][3]
Gretel and Bailey shadow Action News reporter Veronica Hill, whose hopes of becoming a lead serious correspondent are dashed when a new reporter is given that position instead.
Plot[]
Gretel and Bailey are shadowing Veronica Hill as part of a career day assignment for school. Veronica hopes that she will be promoted to lead serious correspondent, making her eligible to interview Mayor Murray Meyer. However, her excitement turns into disappointment when the position is instead given to Harrison Philtrum, a handsome underwear model. Meanwhile, Hamster and Kevin decide to get haircuts at a fancy French salon.
Veronica decides that she will quit, but Gretel and Bailey convince her otherwise, giving her the confidence to congratulate Philtrum. However, Gretel has a superhero hunch and discovers that Philtrum has been possessed by Van Dyke. After a battle, Veronica has a sit-down interview with Van Dyke, during which she deduces that this is all part of a world-domination plot. As Van Dyke possesses numerous people, including Bailey, Hamster and Kevin intervene, with Hamster defeating Van Dyke by placing him in a hair salon machine and having Kevin set it to the highest setting. Veronica is then offered the position of lead serious correspondent, only to instead resume working her regular field reporter job.

News report[]
Veronica Hill: Tonight, is your pillow trying to kill you? That and other questions designed to add fear and anxiety to your life on Action News at 11. This is Veronica Hill reporting. Back to you. |
Veronica Hill: Carl, get over here with the camera and my microphone! (A camera is placed in front of Veronica and her microphone is thrown to her) Veronica Hill: This is Veronica Hill reporting live from the WHOA studios where superhero Gretel is fighting a―uh... I'm not sure what it is. Gretel: It's a mustache! (Van Dyke punches her) An evil, mind-controlling, sentient mustache (gets punched) that used to be a half-beardy goatee! Van Dyke: A Van Dyke! Gretel: Right, named Van Dyke. |
Veronica Hill: As you can see, the evil mustache has control of the mayor while superhero Gretel does her best not to hurt the wrong man. |
Veronica Hill: And there you have it, the age-old story of evil sentient facial hair being taken down by pint-sized superheroes. This is Veronica Hill reporting for the last time. Peace out. (drops the mic) |
Veronica Hill: And that's the story of Tum Tum the Koala who can make exact change. This is Veronica Hill, your lead hard-hitting puff piece correspondent, reporting. Veronica Hill, Gretel, and Bailey: Back to you in the studio! |
Memorable quotes[]
Kevin: Don't take this the wrong way, but you look like something the dog changed his mind about eating. Hamster: Well, no offense, but your hair looks like a kid who drives a minivan and can't get a date. |
Philtrum: Mayor Meyer, if I may be blunt, serious, and hard-hitting, what is your favorite ice cream flavor? Mayor Meyer: Great question, Harrison, but I'm not sure how to answer that. Philtrum: Oh, no need. As long as my question was great. |
Hamster: Mustache, step away from the girls. Gretel: Hamster, I'm so glad you're... a poodle? |
Veronica Hill: Van Dyke, viewers are saying your plan for world domination is lame and overdone. Care to comment? Van Dyke: Wow. I have feelings, you know. |

Background information[]
Trivia[]
- The episode was originally entitled, "Van Dyke's Revenge!".
- This is one of the first two episodes (other being "The Ice Queen Cometh") to premiere on Disney Channel alongside a new episode of The Ghost and Molly McGee.
Allusions[]
- On top of referencing Veronica Hill, the title of this episode is an idiomatic term as well; "over the hill" means "old" and "past its prime".
- Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension - During the song "Fighting Facial Hair Again," Gretel remarks "If I had a nickel for every time I fought facial hair, I'd have two nickels," followed by the lyrics continuing with "which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice;" referencing a similar line Doofenshmirtz said in the movie (which has since the late 2010s become an iconic quote and meme on the internet).
