“ | Oh, we forgot to tell you. Roman and Michelle are coming to the show with us, so you and Bailey get to hang out tonight and share a babysitter. | ” |
"The Bitter Sitter" is the second segment of the nineteenth episode of the first season of Hamster & Gretel, and the thirty-seventh episode overall. It is paired with "My Invisible Friend" and premiered on Disney Channel on March 11, 2023.[1][2]
Bailey has found out about Gretel's double life, and is upset about Gretel lying to her. The rift between the friends continues as Gretel and Bailey are being babysat by Lauren, when Dave, Carolina and a reluctant Kevin attend an interactive murder mystery play.
Plot
Continuing where the previous episode left off, Bailey feels betrayed due to Gretel constantly lying to her to protect her identity and refuses to speak to her. A guilt-stricken Gretel pours her heart out to Kevin, who expresses sympathy for her. Dave and Carolina then announce that they are taking Kevin to a murder-mystery theater show and that they will leave Gretel and Bailey at home with a babysitter. The babysitter, Lauren, attempts to entertain them with fun activities, but to no avail as Bailey is still upset. However, FistPuncher calls Lauren and asks her to go to a warehouse at which people pops, a brand of icicles shaped like people, are stored, having locked himself in the freezer there. A reluctant Lauren ultimately complies to her brother's wishes, bringing Gretel and Bailey along.
Hamster and Gretel enter the freezer and catch FistPuncher and The Destructress stealing people pops, which leads to a battle. Gretel then learns that Lauren is The Destructress and that she took up a babysitting job in an attempt to pursue a non-evil side hobby. Gretel releases Lauren and leaves FistPuncher for the police, only for FistPuncher to break free and continue his pursuit of the people pops. However, Bailey puts a stop to this, after which she breaks her silence with Gretel and the two resume their friendship, bonding over sharing the secret of knowing The Destructress' civilian identity.

Memorable quotes
Dave: Kev, we have good news for you! Carolina: We are taking you with us to the theater tonight! Dave: It's an interactive theatrical murder mystery! You'll love it! Kevin: Oh! I'm sorry, but I have a wall to stare at. |
Lauren: Okay, kiddos. This is my very first babysitting job; I watched a ton of tutorials about stuff kids like to do. Most of it I don't want to do, so let's go bake some cookies! Bailey: That's really nice, but I think I'll just read my book. Gretel: And I'm just gonna stew in my regret and self-loathing. Lauren: Oh, wow. Those tutorials were way off. |
Bailey: You know, you can talk! You could have told me yourself about who you guys are! Hamster: I don't like being in the middle! (Bailey stops Hamster from running away with her book) Bailey: Please tell Gretel that I am unpacking my feelings right now. Hamster: Bailey says she's unpacking― Gretel: I heard. |
Man: Hey, Detective Bummer, the litterbox has a hidden clue. Kevin: I am not cleaning your litterbox! |
Gretel: Speaking of ice pops, the Hamster and Gretel ones come out next week. You still want to eat them together? Bailey: (to Hamster) Could you please tell Gretel that I have unpacked my feelings, but now I need to put them away again? Hamster: Bailey said she― Gretel: Feelings are not clothes! Hamster: Gretel said― Bailey: Just tell her mine are! Hamster: She said to tell you― Gretel: I heard her. |
Hamster: We're cool, right? Bailey: Yeah, we're good. |

Background information
Trivia
- Gretel and Bailey now know the civilian identity of The Destructress being Lauren. This is the second time Gretel found out a villain's identity, following "Romancing the Scone", in which she learns Nordle's father is Professor Exclamation.
- "My Invisible Friend" and "The Bitter Sitter" share a couple similarities with The Ghost and Molly McGee episodes "Scratch the Surface" and "The Friend-Off"; Both pairs of episodes feature a latter episode that directly follow up after a former episode, and both involve the main character's best friend discovering the main character's huge secret that is also the premise of their respective series, at the end of the former episode, with the latter episode having the best friend deal with the new revelation. Both pairs are also put near a midway point of a season (or in Hamster & Gretel's case, near 2/3rd of a season).
- Both former episodes end on a cliffhanger with having the main character's best friend fainted after they reveal their secret to them, and the latter episodes both begin with the BFF's waking up from where they left off.
Errors
- On Disney+, when Gretel says "Now she's never going to talk to me again", the captions transcribe it as "Now he's never going to talk to me again."
