“ | Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the opposite of smart. | ” |
"The Opposite of Smart" is the first segment of the seventh episode of the first season of Hamster & Gretel, and the thirteenth episode overall. It is paired with "Birthday Besties" and premiered on Disney Channel on September 17, 2022.[1]
When a video of Churro doing dumb stuff is posted online, the dog, and by extension Kevin, become insanely popular. Because of this, Kevin prioritizes making more videos of Churro, leaving Gretel ignored.
Plot
While playing video games one night, Fred notices the bizarre behavior of Churro, the Grant-Gomez family dog. Kevin explains to her that this behavior stems from Churro being "the opposite of smart" and demonstrates by showing her a trick, which Fred films and posts on the internet. Churro's popularity on the internet quickly leads to Kevin becoming too preoccupied with filming Churro's antics to spend time with Gretel.
After failing to get his attention on numerous occasions, Hamster and Gretel receive a notification alerting them to a dognapper. However, Kevin initially does not believe them when they inform him. However, when Kevin makes a public appearance, the Dognapper makes off with Churro. An old man and his dog―later revealed to be Hamster and Gretel in disguise―battle the Dognapper and release the other dogs she has kidnapped. Afterwards, Kevin takes Gretel out for ice cream and promises to never allow fame to cloud his better judgement again.

News report
Hamster (after seeing an Action News notification on the police app): Uh-oh. Gretel: What-oh? (Hamster turns the phone towards Gretel) Veronica Hill: Terror has struck as influencer dogs have been stolen from puppy cons all over the Tri-State Area, depriving extremely bored people of their only source of entertainment. No one is sure who the perpetrator is, but one thing is for sure: it's a doggone shame. |

Memorable quotes
Gretel: I bet you're a little jealous, since you're, you know, a miraculous, superpowered talking hamster while Churro's getting all of this attention just for being, you know, dumb. Hamster: Actually, I'm okay with it. |
Kevin: Look, I know we haven't been having a lot of quality time lately, but I promise after Puppy Con, we'll get some hang time. We'll be okay, Li'l G. Gretel: Li'l G? Hamster: I'm still processing K-Man. |
Hamster: The willow survives by bending with the wind. Dog Napper: What does that even mea―? (Hamster blows her away before she can finish her sentence.) |
