"The Silence of the Tchotchkes" is the first segment of the eighth episode of the second season of Hamster & Gretel, and the seventy-third episode overall. It is paired with "A Car is Born" and premiered on Disney Channel on October 5, 2024.[2] This episode has been released early on September 18, 2024 on Disney+.

Kevin has been shrunk using the shrink-o-bottle ray by an unknown assailant. Fred has to work together with its original creator, Tchotchke Jones, to find the culprit.

Plot[]

Fred has been having nightmares involving losing Tchotchke Jones' shrink ray during an altercation with Professor Exclamation and having snake hands, leaving her tired while at the mall with Kevin and Anthony. However, Kevin is suddenly shrunken, leaving Fred, Hamster, and Gretel puzzled as to who could have been the culprit. Fred reluctantly confronts Tchotchke Jones while Kevin is kept in Hamster's cage, where Hamster explains to Kevin the advantages of being small.

During the confrontation, Tchotchke helps Fred realize that her nightmares were the result of a fear of putting her friends and family in danger after losing the shrink ray previously. It is then revealed that Tchotchke purchased the device from Micromanager, who proceeds to shrink Anthony as part of his plan to start a new burger franchise known as Microburger and shrink everyone in town. Kevin, Fred, Hamster, and Gretel arrive to defeat Micromanager, with Kevin dismantling Micromanager's suit by pulling at the wires. Afterwards, Fred restores Kevin and Anthony to their proper sizes before returning to Tchotchke's shop to ake him back to jail, only to find that he has escaped.

Background information[]

Trivia[]

Allusions[]

  • The Silence of the Lambs - The title of this episode is a play on this 1988 thriller novel by Thomas Harris, which is also a sequel to the novel Red Dragon. Various moments in this episode are direct references to this book and its 1991 film adaptation, as well, with Fred assuming the role of Clarice Starling, and Tchotchke the role of Hannibal Lecter.
  • The Creation of Adam - Micromanager's advertisement poster for his upcoming venue, Micro Burger, features a parody of this 1512 fresco painting by Renaissance artist Michelangelo; with Kevin and Anthony, both in burger costumes, taking the places of Adam and God, respectively.

Errors[]

  • The episode reveals that Micromanager actually invented the shrink ray that Tchotchke Jones has been using in "The Bottle Episode"; however, the shrink ray that Micromanager made and used in the episode "Micromanager" has a completely different design, being purple with a short, very large barrel and handle, whereas the shrink ray in "The Bottle Episode" and this episode are long and thin, with a funnel-shaped tip and an attachment at the base of the barrel that transports shrunken targets into a de-attachable bottle (something that would be useful for Tchotchke making impossible bottles like in his debut, but not so much for Micromanager who wanted to shrink onions. Micromanager's lack of awareness of a reverse switch and figuring that Tchotchke added it also implies that he made no further modifications to the shrink ray, despite the obvious design changes.
