"Who's Afraid of Mordros the Annihilator?" is the twentieth full episode of the second season of Hamster & Gretel, and the ninety-sixth episode overall, serving as the season 2 finale of the series. It is separated in two segments called "Who's Afraid of Mordros the Annihilator? - Part I" and "Who's Afraid of Mordros the Annihilator? - Part II", and premiered on Disney Channel on April 13, 2025.[2][3]

Mordros the Annihilator has finally arrived on Earth and begins his plan to annihilate the planet and turn all the humans into chinchillas. Hamster and Gretel, as well as Kevin, Hiromi, Fred, and even Lauren, Footkicker and Lyle, have to prevent Mordros from succeeding.

Plot[]

Part I[]

Continuing from where the previous episode left off, Mordros begins his assault on Earth by attacking the Tri-State Space Agency Headquarters. Just as Kevin, Hiromi, Hamster, and Gretel prepare for the battle, the superpower-granting aliens beam them into their spacecraft and explain to them that Mordros has destroyed their planet many years ago and that granting Hamster and Gretel superpowers was their only hope at defeating him. However, they then claim that due to Kevin and Hiromi's requited love for each other, their chances at defeating Mordros are slim. Meanwhile, Fred and Bailey investigate why Mordros chose the space headquarters by researching information about him.

After introducing himself as a force not to be reckoned with, Mordros continues with his plan by drilling to the center of the Earth, plotting to turn the human race into chinchillas. As Fred and Bailey emerge from a top-secret building with information regarding Mordros' true identity, they are turned into chinchillas after being struck with a ray from the drill. Gretel then attempts to shield Kevin, Hiromi, and Hamster using her force field powers, only for Mordros to destroy her force field; Kevin is subsequently turned into a chinchilla as well after shielding Gretel from the same drill. Retreating to their lair at Hamster's behest, the heroes are left puzzled as to how they will return Kevin, Fred, and Bailey to their human forms and defeat Mordros. Hiromi suggests that destroying the drill will resolve the issue, but Gretel, still angry with Hiromi for her interview stunt, instead goes to Lauren for answers.

When Lauren confronts Mordros as The Destructress, she tricks him into believing that she has defeated Hamster and Gretel as part of a plan for them to sneak onto his ship and destroy his drill. However, Mordros catches on and explains to the heroes via hologram that they have triggered his anti-hero defense system, which gradually strips them of their superpowers.

Part II[]

Learning of his sister's situation, FistPuncher and Footkicker arrive to defend The Destructress. Meanwhile, Hiromi contacts Gretel through Kevin's earpiece, informing her that "all of the people [she] cares about are counting on [her]." This gives Gretel enough strength to destroy the drill, returning Kevin, Fred, and Bailey to their proper human forms. Kevin then rescues Hamster and Gretel from Mordros' anti-hero defense system, realizing that his lack of powers prevented him from being weakened, after which his ship crashes into a nearby mountain. As Mordros prepares to annihilate Kevin and the heroes, Hiromi, Fred, and Bailey arrive with Mrs. Maybank, who is revealed to have had Mordros, a chinchilla himself originally named Nutmeg, in her captivity as a child before the rodent was sent into space as part of the Tri-State Space Agency's Project M.O.R.D.R.O.S., which sent him through a space rift that gave him super strength and human intelligence.

Remembering his love for Mrs. Maybank, Mordros decides that he will still destroy the Earth (though he plans to spare Maybank), having the heroes, Kevin, Hiromi, Fred, and Bailey sucked into the same rift he was sent into decades ago. Wishing to protect her loved ones, Gretel creates a force field around herself and Mordros before engaging in a battle with him. On the verge of being sucked into the rift, Gretel makes use of a Super Punch to send herself and Mordros through. However, Kevin, Hiromi, Fred, Bailey, The Destructress, FistPuncher and Hamster pull Gretel to safety with the aid of Hiromi's Conspiracy Yarn, leading to Mordros' defeat. Gretel thanks everyone for helping her defeat Mordros, with Kevin welcoming Hiromi, FistPuncher, and The Destructress to the team. As the group drives away in the minivan, the aliens briefly consider telling them that there is yet another greater evil coming to Earth before ultimately deciding to allow them to have a happy ending, concluding the show on a high-note.

Running gags[]

Super Punch[]

Gretel: Chinchilla reactor punch!
Gretel: MUTANT CHINCHILLA FROM EARTH WHO SHOULD HAVE GONE TO THERAPY, BUT INSTEAD CAME UP WITH A VERY ELABORATE REVENGE PLAN PUNCH!

News report[]

Veronica Hill: Veronica Hill on the scene of what may be the end of the world. A terror from beyond the stars is wreaking havoc, and no one can stop him―not even The Destructress, who appears to be the only thing standing between us and complete oblivion. And now, to Carl Fritzman with the weather.

Memorable quotes[]

Destructress: Lyle, you came?
FistPuncher: Duh. You may have ruined our evil duo, but I'm still here for you, 'cause you're my sister.
(The Destructress smiles)
FistPuncher: Also, there was nothing good on TV.
Kevin: (voiceover) This is my life: a 16-year old driving a superpowered little sister, a talking hamster, the girl of his dreams, and the best team a guy could ask for. I think I could get used to this.

Background information[]

Trivia[]

  • Both parts of this episode have their title credits displayed in a dark shade of magenta-pink. It is one of the few episodes where the title credits are displayed in an alternate color from light yellow.
  • The aliens claim that the chance of Kevin's romance with Hiromi keeping them from defeating Mordros is 96.7 percent.
  • It is revealed that Mordros was once the pet of Mrs. Maybank before being sent into space as part of the Tri-State Space Agency's Project MORDROS (Military Office Research Deploying Rodent Orbital Study).
    • It is also revealed that Mordros's real name is Nutmeg and that Mrs. Maybank's first name is Lulu.
  • The ending of this episode is a parallel to the beginning of "Empower Failure", making this a narrative device also known as a "bookend". Both feature Kevin driving through a desert, an instrumental rendition of the theme song, and narration by Kevin, with the inclusion of the line, "This is my life," to describe Kevin's current situation.
  • The reason of why the aliens didn't give Kevin any superpowers in the first place is because he needed to remain powerless in order to help Gretel, who is weakened by the anti-hero defense system, to defeat Mordros.
  • The episode reveals that there were other heroes who fought Mordros before Hamster and Gretel and failed. It is possible that these heroes encountered the same aliens that gave Hamster and Gretel their powers or they were given powers by different aliens.
  • Despite having a prominent character arc throughout the season, Nordle and Tobor do not appear in this episode.
  • Dave and Carolina do not appear in this episode, either.
  • This episode is considered to be the final episode of Hamster & Gretel, thus ending its 2-season run.
    • Due to the implied greater evil, it's possible that Hamster and Gretel will appear in the revival of Phineas and Ferb.
  • FistPuncher and Footkicker may have been redeemed in this episode, as they are seen in the end scene with the others.
  • This is the only episode in which viewers get a glimpse of the aliens' appearance. It is filtered because, according to the aliens, their true appearance would make anyone's head explode.
  • According to Dan Povenmire, the story was designed to end on a two-season arc, though there is a chance of a third season being greenlit if the series gains enough popularity alongside the Phineas and Ferb revival[4].

Allusions[]

  • Silly Symphony - The title of this episode might possibly be a play on the title of the song "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?", which first appeared in the 1933 short Three Little Pigs that was part of this series of short films.
    • The title of this song in turn may have been inspired by a British, early 20th century chasing game called "Who's Afraid of Black Peter?", which in turn is based on another ancient children's chasing game called "Black Man", or "Who Is Afraid of the Black Man?" Both games appear to be the predecessor of the game "British bulldog".
  • Superman/DC Comics - Mordros's desire to annihilate planets is similar to Nekron.

Errors[]

  • In the end credits, Vicky's name is misspelled as "Vicki."
  • In the lair, Hiromi notes that the missing part of the photo showing Mordros's origins was chewed up, as evidenced by an earlier shot of chinchilla Bailey and Fred chewing on the photo. However, this part became already missing when Mordros turns Fred and Bailey into chinchillas, making it appear as if the shot from Mordros's chinchilla drill damaged the photo instead.
